Milltek Sport Civic Cup gets set for island encounter

This weekend will provide a brand-new experience for many of the Milltek Sport Civic Cup competitors, when this year’s enthralling and fiercely fought championship heads to Anglesey Circuit for rounds eight and nine out of 16 on Sunday 8th August.

Just three weeks after a truly spectacular pair or races at Oulton Park, in conditions that could best be described as tropical, a forecast that predicts a changeable outlook coupled with the combination of the unique cliff-top track overlooking the Irish Sea to the west and the Sowndonia Mountains to the south – is likely to shake things up for drivers in both the Cup and Production Classes.

With the only driver to have scored three race victories from three meetings, Alistair Camp heads to North Wales heading the drivers’ standings aiming to keep up his impressive record of claiming a win at each venue visited. Having claimed top spot at Brands Hatch in June added to a second place at Oulton Park, Matt Luff is next in line and will be looking to close-up his 19-point deficit this weekend.

Making it an Area Motorsport top-three as the championship enters the second half of the season, Jamie Tonks holds third place seven points behind Luff and, with four podium finishes under his belt, is poised to occupy the top step before too long. Fourth-placed Dave Buky in his Kinetic Motorsport prepared Civic is only two points adrift in fourth and is another warming up for a win, just ahead of PW Racing’s Phillip Wright, who’s consistent results sees him fifth in the table, a further 12 points back.

Introduced for the first time this season, the Production Class for cars with fewer modifications – all of them prepared and run by MJ Motorsport – is proving just as competitive, with the championship lead swapping back-and-forth from meeting-to-meeting.

Having claimed the honours in round one at Cadwell Park, Mervyn Beckett was first to top the table, but with Alfie Threlfall recording an impressive hattrick at the Brands Hatch triple-header, the advantage swung in his direction. But then another win and a third place at Oulton Park for Beckett saw him retake the lead – albeit by just two points as they head to Anglesey this weekend.

Harry Threlfall is next up in third place, his two visits to the podium and three fastest laps so far this season placing him a 18 points behind his brother.

Joining the championship for the first time at Anglesey are Jonathan Shore and David Baldwin, the nine-car Production Class field making it one of the biggest grids in the category so far.

The action takes place around the 2.1-mile International version the circuit, starting with a Free Practice session at 09.90, followed by Qualifying at 10.40 ahead of the two 15-minute races scheduled for 13.00 and 15.40 respectively. Live streaming coverage can be found on Facebook @CivicCupOfficial and the Championship’s You Tube channel.

About the Championship

The Milltek Sport Civic Cup comprises two classes: The Cup Class, for EP3, FN2 and FK models manufactured between 2001 and 2011 with a limited number of modifications permitted; and the Production Class, for EP3 and FN2 Type-R models manufactured between 2001 and 2005.

In all cases, cars must be fitted with Honda’s 2-litre K-Series engine and retain many of the standard OE components. Only controlled performance parts may be fitted. Consequently, costs are kept to a minimum and competition remains close throughout the season.
