Moh ready to take next step at Donington Park
Exciting 16-year-old racing driver, Moh Ritson, will be drawing on the confidence gained from his “most enjoyable race of the season so far” when he takes to the track in the fourth-round of the Britcar Dunlop Endurance Championship, taking place at Donington Park (1st June).
Moh finished sixth in his previous outing at Brands Hatch, producing a superb drive in race two where he showed both attacking and defensive prowess. Attention now turns to the Leicestershire circuit, where the Woodhouse Grove student will be looking for another positive performance in his Tockwith Motorsports (TMS) TRICO-sponsored Ginetta G50.
He said: “Each weekend has thrown something new at me: at Brands Hatch, I had to deal with rain in qualifying and car trouble in race one, but I overcame that in race two and produced my best drive of the season to end the weekend on a high – hopefully, I can give another good performance at Donington.”
On expectations for the weekend, he said: “We always aim for the podium; I know that’s not always possible, but I always believe we can make the step up. We will have to wait until the car takes to the track to discover if it has the pace to challenge the front, but I am confident.”
Moh’s positive start to the Britcar campaign, his first senior motor racing season, has impressed TMS’ bosses, so much so that he is due to start at least one of the two races at Donington Park.
So far this season, Moh’s experienced team-mate and reigning champion, Sarah Moore, has led the first stint of every race, before giving way to Moh in the pit-lane. He then completes the second-half of the race and takes the chequered flag.
Moh explained the challenges of a rolling start and how the dynamic of the race might change as a result of the driver switch: “The trick is to judge when to push on the accelerator and keep my foot flat; if I have to take my foot off or apply the brake, and the driver in-front pulls away, I will lose time and my entry into the corner will be compromised.
“It’ll be interesting to analyse afterwards how the strategy pays off, but I am hopeful, with my attacking style and, naturally, the cars being closer together at the start, we can make-up some places off the grid. Hopefully, Sarah, who is one of the fastest drivers on the grid, can make-up further ground later in the race.”
Away from the circuit, Moh has been juggling motor racing with A-level exams. While exam season will have concluded before he dons his race-suit and helmet at Donington Park, he knows there is one person that will be paying particular attention to the results.
He joked: “My dad sat geography, so I’m sure he’ll be looking out for that result, in particular!”
